# Journal Entry 14

Today was the presentation on Chapter 6. Elvera, Faten, Liyana && Izlin were the respected members of Group 6. They presented on 'The Class Reader Programme'.

Basically, I only know Class Reader Programme (CRP) as Projek Nilam--the reading project implemented during my secondary school years. Allow me to reminisce back the memories then. I studied in Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Convent Taiping, Perak. When people ask, "Where did you study during your secondary school years?"

And they instantly gasp when I answer, "Convent Taiping."

Which then leads them to make such statements, "Wow, that's quite a prestige school in Taiping district. Your English must be good."

*sighhhh....

Albeit the school that I went is a Convent school, it does not guarantee me to have high proficiency in English. I am not fluent when it comes to speaking. Until now. Because there is no such things as 'English is the medium of communication in Convent Taiping, therefore the students there speak fluent English.'

Yes, the medium of communication is English but we never actually apply it. Even now. Back then, we talked in our own mother tongue. And we had our own cliques, whereby we mixed with our own kind--the Malays were at one corner, the Chinese at the other corner, meanwhile, the Indians were the minority.

When it comes to Projek Nilam, only a few particpated. The class teacher would encourage us to fill in the books given. These books were to be filled with certain aspects of the novels that we had read like the title of the novel, date of reading, sinopsis, vocabulary, comment, etc. Certain class teachers were quite strict of the students' participation, thus they employed their 'autocraticness', by all means, to make their students participate.

Of course, it worked. For them. They managed to make us submit the Nilam books because we were so afraid to be punished. But somehow, for us, it did not work. Projek Nilam was a failure because we did not read the novels that we had been filling in the Nilam books. We borrowed some books from the library, turned over at the back of the novels and copied the title, author's name, sinopsis, etc. As for the vocabulary, we simply picked the words randomly from the pages, looked up at the dictionary--never bother to thoroughly 'study' or understand the meanings--and wrote them down in the Nilam book. For the comment part, we merely jotted the short ones like, "The novel is interesting" or "Most of the words are difficult" or "This novel is too short."

And you know what? After I have finished recalling back all those memories up there, I found out that CRP is NOT the Projek Nilam. To my horror, all this while, I have misinterpreted CRP.

I googled about CRP a while ago and I came across this and this.

Today as well we proceeded with Chapter 7, presented by Syazwani, Aimi && Aimy Nadia. They presented on 'Literature in English Programme' or LEP.
